It finally happened to me. I tested positive for COVID on Friday, May 13th. Lucky me. I mean it, lucky me. I had just gotten my second booster shot the Saturday before. A total of 4 vaccines — 2 Pfizer and 2 Moderna. I wanted to cover all the bases. Then, less than a week later, I had a sore throat, coughing, and sneezing. Allergies, I thought. Sure, my sore throat was a bit worse than normal. And, I was sneezing a lot.

What the hell, I’ll take a COVID test. I have a whole stash in the closet and they’ll probably expire before I need them.

I had plans for the weekend and wanted to make sure I was good to go. Plus, it was Friday. Never get sick on Friday. Doctor’s offices are closed over the weekend and by the time Monday comes around, you’re either better or dead.

I was shocked to see the bright test line appear next to the control line. “This can’t be right,” I thought. I may have even said it out loud to the empty room. I decided to take another test, convinced the first test was defective. I got the same result a second time. I had COVID.

How the hell did I get COVID? I never go anywhere! And, when I do, I wear a mask, even now that most people don’t. After more than three weeks, I still have no idea where I got infected.

But, I’m lucky. Damned lucky. The disease that has killed a million Americans was no worse for me than a bad allergy attack. In addition to the 4 vaccines, I got my ass to Urgent Care and loaded up on Paxlovid, the oral anti-viral FDA approved for treating COVID. I wanted to cover all the bases.

I’m what people might consider “high-risk.” I have a history of asthma and when I get a lung infection, I get really, really sick. Walking pneumonia is a yearly phenomenon. I’ve broken a rib coughing. And, I’ve spent the past two years terrified of getting COVID. Now that I’ve had it, I can honestly say, No Big Deal!

I believe in SCIENCE!

Now, after recovering from COVID, I’m having a mini-relapse of symptoms. A sore throat and headache. But, honestly, No Big Deal. I’ll be fine.

I’m so grateful to the throngs of researchers, scientists, doctors, health care workers, patients, politicians and pharma companies (yes, even them) for developing life-saving treatments. How anyone could pass up the opportunity to get vaccinated is insane. Over 220 million Americans have been fully vaccinated and there have been very few serious side effects. These treatments are built upon decades of medical research and are safe and effective. I hope everyone gets vaccinated and breezes through their bout with COVID like I did.
